A Tennesse woman has landed in jail for punching her son in the face for being gay.
Jacqueline Alexander was charged with domestic assault for attacking her son after neighbors called police to their Memphis apartment around 11pm on Tuesday (17 February).
Police said her son was lying in bed when she accused him of ‘being too feminine and gay.’ Officers found bruises on his face when they arrived.
The boy’s name and age have not been released.
‘It’s shocking every time it happens, but it’s not new to us at the center,’ Will Batts, who runs the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Center, told WMC TV station.
‘We hear a lot of stories about people who are assaulted by family members. Young people who are kicked out of their houses when they come out to a parent.’
Alexander is in jail on a $1,000 bond and her first court date is scheduled for 19 February.
