A man is in jail after being accused of throwing boiling water over a gay couple as they slept.
Martin Blackwell, 48, was the boyfriend of the mother of one of the victims Anthony Gooden.
As Gooden lay in bed asleep with boyfriend Marquez Tolbert, a police report states Blackwell marched to their room to pour the boiling water all over them. He said he was ‘disgusted’ with the relationship.
Blackwell was charged with two counts of aggravated battery in the incident that occurred a couple of days after Valentine’s Day.
Tolbert spent 10 days undergoing surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, with Gooden released last week.
According to a GoFundMe launched by a friend of the couple, the mother and boyfriend are no longer together.
‘I have watched Marquez’s mother suffer right along with him,’ they said. ‘When he came out to her, she told me that her son being harmed was her greatest fear. ‘It’s a shame that our society places that kind on fear in a parent’s heart. It gives you a feeling of helplessness, and when it actually occurs, you lose hope. Marquez is home now, but has a long road to recovery. Through it all, he has remained strong and not disheartened by what has happened to him. I am so impressed by his character. He has been focused on healing, and in a way, has been holding up his mother.’
Blackwell is being held at the Fulton County Jail, according to AP. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
