National Football League teams in contact with Michael Sam

Approximately six National Football League teams have recently called Michael Sam, the league’s first out player.

The rookie has been unsigned since being cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad on 21 October. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there is some interest in the seventh-round draft pick.

‘There have been about a half-dozen (NFL) teams in contact with Michael Sam, so he could get an opportunity to come back to a practice squad at any time now,’ Schefter said, as reported by CBS Sports.

‘But the other thing to remember here is that we’re about a month away from NFL teams signing players to future contracts for next season,’ the ESPN reporter continued. ‘And clearly, he’s had contact with these teams. It wouldn’t be surprising if he wound up signing a futures contract to go to camp with another team next summer.

‘There’s certainly been interest from some teams (but) not enough to get him on a practice squad. But he’s been in contact, he does want to continue to play. Think he’ll get that opportunity in the next month or so.’

There are 32 teams in the league.

Sam made American football history as the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team and to play in pre-season games.
