New health strategy for trans and gender diverse Australians

Leading Australian LGBTI health organization, ACON, this week launched a health action plan for the trans and gender diverse community in New South Wales.

The historic new health strategy is the first step in addressing the unique health issues facing trans and gender diverse people, according to ACON.

‘This Blueprint aims to provide a comprehensive and coordinated action plan for governments, healthcare providers, organizations and services on improving the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse people’ said ACON Board Director Atari Metcalf.

Metcalf and ACON launched the blueprint at the NSW Parliament House this week.

The blueprint outlines the need for better access to patient-centered gender-affirming health care.

It calls for gender diverse services to be included in the health system.

The blueprint urges reform in documentation processes, so that trans and gender diverse people can change their official identification without surgery.

It also encourages knowledge in the health sector—with knowledge and training for employers and greater inclusion of gender diverse people in the workforce.

‘We know that compared to the general population there are significant disparities in the health outcomes of trans and gender diverse people in many areas such as mental health issues, suicidality, self-harm, substance abuse, domestic violence and exclusion,’ Metcalf said.

Australia last year launched the first nationwide research into sex, romance, and well-being of the trans and gender diverse community.

The Australia Trans and Gender Diverse Sexual Health Survey was launched by the Kirby Institute in collaboration with researchers and community advocates from around Australia

Also last year, City Legal Centre (ICLC) in Sydney launched a specialized service for transgender Australians.

Advice ranged from applications to change names, advice about accessing bathrooms, and an Apprehended Violence Order, according to center director, Vicki Harding.

Transgender people can face discrimination in employment, education, and accessing goods and services’, explained Harding. They experience vilification at markedly higher rates than the rest of the population, including LGB, she said.
