Southern Decadence, a New Orleans gay festival which draws over 100,000 LGBT people to the state, will be celebrating after Isaac today (1 September).
Isaac, now a tropical storm, caused heavy flooding in areas around the state and damage around the Gulf Coast, nearly seven years to the day after the devastating Hurricane Katrina.
Organizers say the show will go on, billed as the ‘Gay Mardi Gras’, is older than both hurricanes and is responsible for bringing millions in revenue and tourism to the US state.
Gregory Kelly, writing for Examiner.com, says: ‘Southern Decadence expresses the very foundation of the gay community and opens the doors for others to learn about the true spirit of the LGBT among the atmosphere of friends.
‘So storm or no storm, this train is moving forward and no matter what happens, the LGBTQ in New Orleans is going to stand their ground.
‘That is what Southern Decadence is all about.’
Christian extremists pointed to the festival as evidence it was God punishing the United States for pushing the ‘homosexual agenda’.
As Gay Star News reported, Chaplain John McTernan from anti-gay online ministry Defend Proclaim The Faith said the city, church and state ‘had not repented’.
In a blog post, he said: ‘New Orleans is still hosting Southern Decadence with open homosexuality manifesting in the streets of the city.
‘It could be that God is putting an end to this city and its wickedness.’
Buster Wilson, from certified hate group American Family Association, also said God was using Hurricane Isaac to punish New Orleans for hosting a gay festival.
He said: ‘There is example after example after example, where if the people don’t live right, God will come in sometimes and literally destroy a place.’
Liberal satirist Stephen Colbert took a more jovial approach to explain why gays cause hurricanes.
In a piece for The Colbert Report, he said: ‘Hurricanes form from rising moisture created by hot steamy man action aboard a gay Caribbean cruise.
‘When that sin gets high enough it makes the angels cry and those tears fall to earth in the form of massive precipitation because homosexuals are a vital part of the water cycle.
‘That’s why the gay symbol is a rainbow!’
