New York is getting 50 murals across five boroughs for World Pride

New York City‘s five boroughs are getting a Pride makeover with a series of murals ahead of World Pride.

In order to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots, 50 murals will be painted in several locations across town.

The murals are part of an initiative from NYC Pride for the World Mural Project. Started in May, the project will continue throughout June, with new murals popping up across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

The murals express ‘our defiance, our fears, our gratitude’

‘Expression of self is an art form for the LGBTQIA+ community. So, when thinking about the monumental task of hosting the first WorldPride in the United States, in conjunction with 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, we knew we had to create something that would express, our defiance, our fears, our gratitude and our pride,’ New York Pride website reads.

‘There is no better way to do this than thru art.’

The first mural designed by local artist Buff Monster was completed in May. It can be viewed on the corner of Chrystie and Broome Street on the Lower East Side.
