- The Netflix series about a gun-toting gay zoo owner has attracted 64million viewers.
Nicolas Cage is to star as gay zookeeper Joe Exotic in a new TV series based on the Tiger King story.
The Netflix series Tiger King has made Joe Exotic a household name. It has attracted more than 64 million viewers since it came out in March.
It follows the gun-toting, polyamorous redneck Exotic as he fights to save his roadside big cat animal park.
However it’s not just the animals who add the drama. Joe has two husbands, and a vast range of colorful, crazy and criminal friends and foes. To that mix you can add meth, guns and genital piercings.
Meanwhile he battles with Big Cat Rescue owner Carole Baskin who accuses him of cruelty.
Nicolas Cage is best known for his Oscar-winning performance as an alcoholic Hollywood writer in Leaving Las Vegas.
He will be executive producer of the new series as well as taking Exotic’s role. Dan Lagana, famous for American Vandal, will write the script.
Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios are producing the eight episodes. And they will soon be shopping them around to TV networks and streaming platforms.
Other Tiger Kings may be available
However, it is not the only new version of the story being made.
Director Ryan Murphy, the creator of Hollywood, Glee, Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story, is also making an adaptation of Tiger King. He has cast Rob Lowe in the lead role.
Moreover, a TV drama version of the events has also been in the pipeline since November. It will see Kate McKinnnon playing Exotic’s nemesis Carole Baskin.
A host of names have joked they are ready and able to play Exotic, including Jared Leto, Shane West and Edward Norton.
Meanwhile the real Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, continues to serve a 22-year prison sentence for murdering Baskin.
