Nicole Kidman calls for same-sex marriage in Australia

Nicole Kidman has made a rare step into politics, calling for same-sex marriage in Australia and for the US to support Donald Trump.

As a dual US and Australian citizen, the 49-year-old actor is able to cast her vote in both elections.

Kidman and husband Keith Urban were two of the few celebrities who proclaimed they had voted in the election but not reveal whether they had voted for Trump or Hillary Clinton.

Making it clear she is ‘issue-based’ and does not align herself with any political party, Kidman said it is now time for the country to get behind the president-elect.

‘He’s now elected and we as a country need to support whoever is the president,’ she said on The Victoria Derbyshire Show.

‘That is what the country is based on. And however that happened, it happened, and let’s go.’

The Eyes Wide Shut star said her main interest is in women’s issues, raising money for UN Women and spreading awareness for breast and ovarian cancer.

Host Victoria Derbyshire also asked for Kidman’s opinion on marriage equality and what she would say to Australian politicians who do not support same-sex marriage.

‘I believe in it,’ she said. ‘I believe in allowing people who love each other to share their lives together and honor it.

‘I really believe we should stay out of people’s businesses like that. I love when people love each other and want that to be acknowledged legally because that’s protection as well as well as saying you are committed and commitment is a wonderful thing.’
