NYPD looking for suspect in an assault on a gay man

The New York City Police Department is searching for a suspect in an early September assault on a gay man.

On 14 September, a 21-year-old gay man was on West 48th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues. That is known as Manhattan’s Midtown West/Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood.

According to Gothamist, the victim was approached by a suspect who yelled anti-gay slurs. The suspect allegedly struck the man in the back of the head; the victim fell on the pavement.

He was transported to hospital and released. Law enforcement are not presently investigating the attack as a hate crime, but are searching for the suspect.

He’s described as a 25-year-old white or Hispanic male, approximately 5ft 10in (1.77m) and 180 pounds (81kg).

If you have information about this crime, please contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. People can also use the Crime Stoppers Website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

There is a surveillance video of the suspect on Gothamist’s site. It’s posted below.

Recent figures from the city police department show anti-LGBTI violence doubling from 2012 to 2013. Last week, 27 September, two men, and a teenager, were arrested for shooting at a pair of gay men.
