OITNB’s Ruby Rose to appear at Brighton Pride

She’s the star the whole world is talking about – and Gay Star News can reveal Ruby Rose, who appears in the newly-released third series of Orange Is the New Black, is to appear at this year’s Brighton Pride.

Fans can look forward to getting up close and personal with the actress, model and campaigner as she headlines and DJs at the Girls’ Dance Tent and Koochy Official Brighton Pride After Party for Girls at Concorde2 in August.

Speaking about the news, the 29-year-old Australian said: ‘It is my first time in Brighton and I am stoked!’

‘I love the UK. When DJing I jump about a lot and I’m pretty goofy but the music is always good. The love at Pride events is palpable and I always want to connect to my brothers and sisters.’

In an interview on the Brighton Pride website, the star also speaks about the issue of gender-fluidity hitting the mainstream: ‘It’s all been baby steps, sometimes individuals come out (excuse the pun) like Ellen or Laverne and help us take giant leaps but generally we are going at a slow pace. It’s all the small things that add up and gain momentum.’

She continued: ‘Shows incorporating gender fluid characters, celebrities coming out as gender queer, trans people getting screen time and magazine covers. Also I think it has been great for people to know a term or label for things that represents the way they feel, that they may not have felt were real, or accepted or experienced by other people.’

On her Orange Is the New Black role, she says: ‘I don’t know if she was written with me in mind, but I felt very comfortable and at home playing her.’

She added: ‘What’s not to love about the show? It covers all types of demographics, religions, sex, gender identity, sexuality, and age. And it tells a story with heart.’

Brighton Pride will take place over the weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August 2015.
