WATCH: Olly Alexander caught a Pride flag at a Brazil gig and it was iconic

Olly Alexander described catching a Pride flag during a gig in Brazil as ‘one of the greatest moments of his life.’

In a glittery mesh vest and black and silver panelled pants, the Years & Years singer proudly swung the flag around to the applause of fans.

He was mid-singing All For You when a fan threw the flag at him, which Alexander effortlessly caught yesterday (8 April) in São Paulo. The final night of his South American tour.

‘Proving gays can catch’

After Alexander picked-up on fan footage of his finesse, fans left, right, and center lit up.

Alexander tweeted: ‘So happy someone caught the moment I caught a rainbow flag!

‘Proving gays can catch on live TV.’

One fan dubbed the singer: ‘The king of sports.’

‘I will definitely have my mini Pride Flag in hand when I see you in D.C.,’ another fan promised.

A third fan wryly tweeted: ‘Olly Alexander caught the first brick at Stonewall.’

Years & Years were in the Brazilian state as part of their South America tour for Lollapolloza.

Catching the flag ultimately ended the tour, with Alexander’s send off as: ‘LGBT+ people in Brazil are very inspirational and cool af.’

LGBTI rights in Brazil

The thrown flag comes at a dark time for queer folk in Brazil. The country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, won elections earlier this year with a manifesto promising to ensure ‘traditional family values.’

But this right-wing administration have stood acrimoniously against Brazilian LGBTI people, who have witnessed their rights backslide.

Many LGBTI Brazilians who said they were fearful for their rights and safety under the rule of the openly homophobic Bolsonaro.
