One Million Moms have taken on Ellen DeGeneres and Modern Family, but this time it is the ‘perverted’ Muppets that have got the anti-gay group outraged.
The conservative group, made up of far, far less than one million mothers, have slammed the new ABC show starring the family-friendly puppets as ‘shocking’.
In the run-up to the show’s premiere, ABC has made clear this is a nostalgia-driven show for adults – a departure from the beloved Muppet Show.
Shot in a mockumentary style, it focuses on Kermit and Miss Piggy’s breakup, Fozzie Bear’s relationship with a woman and much more.
In one ad, Kermit is in a scarf saying: ‘Finally, a network TV show with full frontal nudity’.
‘1MM (One Million Moms) suspects there are going to be a lot of shocked moms and dads when they discover that the family-friendly Muppets of the 1970s are no more. It appears that no subject is off limits,’ the group says in a petition, calling on ABC to cancel the show.
‘Kermit doesn’t wear pants,’ they add incredulously. ‘The puppet characters loved by kids in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond are now weighing in on abortion and promiscuity.’
They added: ‘Many parents unknowingly will let their children watch an episode only to find out its perverted nature too late, unless they are alerted ahead of time. 1MM and others need to get the word out to families to avoid this program at all costs.‘
They then give a number for people to call ABC to complain about the show, as well as giving the show’s airdate and timeslot. Ever heard of the Streisand Effect 1MM? Might not have been the greatest idea if you don’t want people to watch the show.
The Muppets airs on Tuesdays on ABC.
