Florida’s iconic red pump is making a London debut at the Gay Star Beach Party & LGBTI Travel Show, held 18 and 19 January from 12pm to 5pm.
Offering Gay Star Beach Party guests the chance to win a four-night stay in a Florida Keys luxury hotel, the Key West Tourism Board is shipping the iconic life-size pump used in the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Since 1996, the beloved drag queen Sushi has been the star of the New Year’s Eve shoe drop, where you can see by the photo involves her being lowered in a giant red shoe in the center of Key West’s Bourbon Street Pub at the midnight countdown.
Gay Star Beach Party guests will get the chance to fill in Sushi’s shoe (no dropping, though) and are encouraged to take photos. The best selfie using the hashtag #gaystarbeachparty and tagging @thefloridakeys across any and all of their social media will win.
Gay Star Beach Party guests, while enjoying drink specials, swimwear fashion show and socializing with London’s LGBTI community, can also enter to win a trip and stay in Vienna, and more.
Sushi’s shoe joins other destinations popular with LGBTI travelers including:
- Vienna Tourism Board and Austrian Airlines
- Israel Tourism Board
- Ecuador and the Galapagos represented by Outbound Expectations
- The UK outdoors represented by Outdoor Lads
- Manchester Pride and Student Pride
- The global gay and lesbian community represented by Gaydar and Gaydar Girls
- Travel health issues covered by sexual rights groups Stonewall and Terrence Higgins Trust
Key West has long been a favorite destination with the LGBTI community for its beautiful weather, welcoming tropical-like beaches and proximity to other gay destinations like Latin America and Europe.
