The three suspects in the beating of a gay couple in Philadelphia surrendered to authorities on Wednesday (24 September) and it turns out one of the them is the daughter of a local police chief.
Kathryn Knott, 24, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and criminal conspiracy along with Philip Williams, 24, and Kevin Harrigan, 26.
Her father is Chalfont, Bucks County Police Chief Karl Knott.
The daughter has posted a series of homophobic tweets on her Twitter account in recent years including: ‘The ppl we were just dancing with just turned and ma(d)e out with eatch other #gay #ew," "Jazz flute is for little fairy boys," and ‘this camo song is gay like all the other brad paisley songs.’
Her Twitter account is also filled with numerous photos of alcohol and tweets about how drunk she and also includes derogatory comments about Asians and racists tweets such as ‘My cab driver starting shouting some jihad shit so I starting singing America the beautiful #merrica’
The incident unfolded at 10:45 pm on 11 September when a group approached the couple. ‘Is this your fucking boyfriend,’ someone in the group asked.
The gay men, both in their late 20s, were were taken to a hospital after they were attacked and held as other suspects punched them in the face, head, and chest.
The suspects cannot be charged with a hate crime because sexual orientation is not covered in the state’s current hate crime law.
