Openly gay mayor in Massachusetts targeted with threats

Holyoke, Massachusetts Mayor Alex Morse was elected in 2011 at age 22.

Alex Morse, the openly gay mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts, says he’s twice been targeted in anti-gay incidents in recent weeks.

In one incident, the young politician received a note which read: ‘Alex, You are one of the most selfish people that I know due to your “gay” lifestyle. You are going down.’

Morse is not suffering in silence – especially in a post-Trump election environment that has seen numerous anti-gay incident reported.

The young politician, who was just 22 when he was elected mayor in 2011, posted the note on his Facebook page and said that anonymous hate mail isn’t uncommon and doesn’t typically bother him.

‘But given we have a President-elect who just announced the appointment of an Attorney General who will do nothing to protect LGBTQ Americans and people of color, it’s important to bring to light the progress we need to protect and the challenges still ahead.’

He added the hashtag #TrumpsAmerica to his comments.

Another incident involved the defacing of one of Morse’s campaign signs.

Added to ‘Alex Morse for Mayor’ were the words ‘sucks’ and ‘literally’ although the second word was mispelled as ‘litteally.’ At the bottom of the sign is ‘www.gay.com.’

Morse is not sure if sign is related to the anonymous letter but he is forwarding all the information to the city’s police chief.
