Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is charged with murder, was cut from the pro-gay It Gets Better campaign yesterday (18 February).
The organizers of the campaign aiming to stop homophobic bullying said it would be inappropriate for the sportsman to continue to be involved, the South Africa Times reports.
Pistorius, 26, is alleged to have shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29, three times through a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home on 14 February. Hundreds are expected to attend her funeral today.
While prosecutors say it was premeditated, the defense insists Pistorius did not know Steenkamp was in the bathroom. It is believed Pistorius thought she was an intruder.
Arguing her death was accidental in the court hearing, Pistorius’ lawyer Barry Roux said: ‘We submit it is not even murder. There is no concession this is a murder.’
‘All we really know is she locked herself behind the toilet door and she was shot,’ he added.
Pistorius broke down in tears during the hearing which will determine whether he should get bail.
The It Gets Better campaign, which was started three years ago, is to launch officially in South Africa this week.
In Pistorius’ video, which will no longer be included, he says: ‘Just remember that you’re special. You don’t have to worry. You don’t have to change. Take a deep breath and remember “It will get better”.
