Philippines newspaper drops long running comic strip over lesbian nun joke

A newspaper in the Philippines has dropped a long running popular comic strip after  it received complaints about a cartoon that suggested the nuns and students of the all girls St Scholastica College in Manilla were lesbians.

Pugad Baboy (Nest of Pigs) had become one of the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s most popular comic strips since it began publishing it in 1988.

But Sister Mary Thomas Prado, the college’s principal threatened to sue the newspaper unless it launched an internal investigation into how the offending cartoon was published.

Philippine Daily Inquirer internal ombudsman Elena Pernia announced the comic strip would no longer be published by the newspaper and confirmed an inquiry was to be held.

‘The comic strip will not appear in our pages pending results of an investigation,’ Pernia told AFP.

‘I am not very comfortable saying that certain ethical lines were crossed, but one thing that is certain is that certain groups were offended.’
