Philippines presidential palace ‘respects’ same-sex marriage

The Philippine presidential palace yesterday (21 December) said it ‘respects’ the rights of gay couples to marry but any plans to legalize same-sex marriage had to come from Congress.

During a radio interview, Malacañang Palace communications secretary Herminio Coloma Jr was asked to comment on the recent marriage of transgender singer Aiza Seguerra to his actress girlfriend, Liza Dino, in California.

‘We must respect the rights of individuals to enter into such partnerships as part of their human rights,’ he told dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.

‘But we just need to wait for the proposals in Congress.’

He added that the family code defines marriage as ‘a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into, in accordance with law, for the establishment of conjugal and family life.’
