Australia celebrated two successful sporting Pride Games over the weekend with one of them saying ‘Puck You to Homophobia’.

Australian Rules Football (AFL) is one of the country’s most popular sports and on Saturday hosted the second annual Pride Game.

More than 34,000 packed the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to watch the St Kilda Saints from Melbourne battle it out against the Sydney Swans. Goal umpires waved rainbow flags when players scored. The Saints players’ jersey numbers were also rainbow colours.

‘For us the Pride Match is a wonderful opportunity for the Saints and the Swans to stage the first game of its type in world sport,’ Saint’s CEO Matt Finnis said.

‘For us that creates a hero opportunity to send a message that says everyone’s welcome, everyone belongs at the footy.

‘The sad reality is for so many gay people they haven’t felt comfortable at the football and that’s not right so we’ve got to do what we can to change that.’

In Melbourne the Australian Ice Hockey League also hosted its first Pride Game between the Melbourne Mustangs and Newcastle North Stars.

The initiative was so successful, other AIHL teams now want to get in on the action and host their own Pride Games.

The AIHL came up with the catchy ‘Puck You to Homophobia’ tagline to promote LGBTI inclusion in sports.

Out on the Fields was a study that revealed widespread homophobic behaviour in Australian sports. A high number of participants did not feel safe, had experienced homophobic violence, bullying, slurs or choose to stay in the closet for fear of repercussions.
