The fourth Winter Pride Maspalomas concluded yesterday in Gran Canaria. The Spanish island, which actually lies off the coast of Africa, is one of Europe’s most popular gay hotspots throughout the year – thanks in part to the consistently warm weather.
Winter Pride offered a whole week of fun and frolics in the sunshine, with associated events at the many gay bars and clubs in the Yumbo Center. There’s also a Pride Walk, attracting around 12,000 participants, and a main stage at the Yumbo, which played host to performances from Sonique, Corona, Livin’ Joy, Cristina Ramos and many other producers of dance classics.
‘Now in its fourth year the event appears to have shifted gear this year,’ said local resident Rob Dean to GSN, ‘investing more in the international talent who perform and bringing the main stage up to date with video and electronics that light up the Yumbo’s main square.’
The Brit, who relocated to Gran Canaria a couple of years ago, added, ‘To me Winter Pride has a higher fun element and a greater sense of belonging when compared to the May Pride event.
‘Perhaps Winter Pride brings back the feel good factor when elsewhere dark nights and colder weather is settling in.’
