Pope Benedict XVI may have officially resigned, but he will not give up his alleged secret boyfriend.
Personal secretary Archbishop Georg Gänswein, dubbed ‘Gorgeous Georg’, will continue to be the former leader of the Roman Catholic Church’s personal secretary.
Since 2005, the two have had breakfast, lunch, dinner together every day, but not anymore as Gänswein will now be serving both pontiffs.
He will live with Benedict at the monastery inside the Vatican, and keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope’s household.
‘This man – clearly in some kind of love with Ratzinger (and vice-versa) will now be working for the new Pope as secretary in the day and spending the nights with the Pope Emeritus. This is not the Vatican. It’s Melrose Place,’ he said.
Sullivan is not alone in his suspicions. Italian author Angelo Ouattrocchi released a book, playfully titled ‘The Pope Is Not Gay’, that reached similar conclusions.
As the Business Insider notes, former Benedictine monk-priest and author Richard Sipe also claims to have spoken to a number of Roman clerics and members of the Roman press corps who were ‘convinced’ that Benedict XVI was gay.
It does not help rumors have surrounded Gänswein’s sexuality for years, dubbed the ‘George Clooney of the Vatican’ and having once appeared on the cover of Italy’s Vanity Fair.
While theories of the alleged love affair are likely to continue, no one has produced any evidence of the supposed relationship.
It is perhaps unlikely, as he has previously said same-sex marriage is unnatural and poses a threat to ‘justice and peace’, and has called gay people not fully developed humans.
