Bear Week Provincetown 2019

Bear Week Provincetown is one of the busiest weeks in the Provincetown summer season. The event draws in big boys and gay bears from all over the world.

The small, US town, at the furthest point of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a gay-friendly destination all year round, but it really comes into its own in the summer months.

Organized by Provincetown Bears, this year’s Bear Week was the 19th such event. Running from 13-21 July, what people like about the festival is that it’s not all about partying.

Sure, there’s daily parties around the pool of the Boat Slip Resort and dance events at the Crown & Anchor (among other venues), but there’s also beach outings, nature walks, a bear market, ‘Spiritual Bears’ meet-ups at various faith spaces and more besides. Most evenings ended with the nightly bear block party at Spiritus Pizza!

The organizers are careful not to pack too much into the schedule, leaving attendees free to sample the many other delights of Provincetown, from its history and restaurants to other LGBTI delights. Even a couple of days of rain did little to dampen anyone’s spirits.

‘Bear week is special because of Provincetown’

‘Bear week is special because of Provincetown,’ Steve Stuber (@stevestuber), one regular attendee, told GSN. ‘The people who own, live or work here are the most welcoming group of locals I’ve ever met! We’ve been coming here for years because of that. Provincetown is a little slice of heaven.’

This viewed was backed up by Adam Black (@iron_pusher): ‘My husband Justin and me have been coming out from Australia since 2010 with this our sixth year. The Cape has a draw like no other.

‘Ptown Bear Week has something for everyone. It’s a week where you can be true to oneself; free to engage with activities, people and the natural environment as much as you like.’

Greg Hernandez, from Los Angeles, made his first visit to Provincetown last week – a trip that coincided with Bear Week.

‘Bear Week in P-Town has been magical. There’s an overwhelming sense of friendliness, lack of judgement, freedom and fun. All body types, all ages. For someone from Los Angels here for the first time, this has been such a unique experience.’

Next year’s Bear Week Provincetown will be the 20th anniversary of the event. It will also be the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers on this corner of New England. It promises to be extra special and even busier than usual.

Finding reasonably-priced accommodation can be a challenge, so you’d be wise to keep your eye out for when the dates are announced and book up your accommodation a.s.a.p!
