Swan Song: Udo Kier to star in new gay film by director Todd Stephens

Another Gay Movie director, Todd Stephens, has announced plans to shoot the final instalment of his Ohio trilogy this year.

Swan Song is a fictionalized memoir of a flamboyant hairdresser in 1980’s small town Sandusky. The lead character, Mister Pat, will be played by legendary actor, Udo Kier.

‘Mister Pat was a revelation; out, loud and proud in a very different era,’ said Stephens. The director was 17 when he first saw the older man on the dance floor at his local gay bar, The Universal Fruit and Nut Company, in Sandusky, Ohio.

Stephens is also hoping to fund the new film via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. In less than a week the campaign has raised nearly $47,000 out of a $75,000 target.

Swan Song returns to Ohio

‘My trilogy is inspired by my Ohio hometown. The first two films were about trying to escape it, and the last is about embracing where you came from.’

Stephens said he was ecstatic to have signed up Kier for the lead role. ‘Udo Kier has been one of my idols all my life. I am thrilled to have someone play the character who can imbue it with such authenticity.

Kier, who has starred in 200 films, including Downsizing, My Own Private Idaho, and Andy Warhol’s Dracula, said he loved the script.

‘After 50 years in the business, this is one of the best scripts I have seen’, he said in a special video on the crowdfund page.

Boy Culture, G.F.B. and Miles producer, Stephen Israel, is also working on the project.

‘Todd and I have been talking about working together for over ten years’, Israel said. ‘Between us, I think we’ll make something world class that we can be proud of – and makes a contribution to LGBTQ cinema while preserving an important part of our history that’s in danger of being forgotten.’

Swan Song is set to be released in 2020.
