Rami Malek wins Best Actor SAG Award – as Gaga loses out

Rami Malek won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Bohemian Rhapsody at last night’s SAG Awards in LA.

The star is also Oscar nominated for his starring role as the late Freddie Mercury in last year’s Queen biopic.

Meanwhile Glenn Close won Female Actor for her role in The Wife, inching out Lady Gaga who was nominated for A Star Is Born.

‘Taken aback’

Accepting his award at LA’s Shrine Auditorium, Rami said: ‘Wow – this just seems extraordinary to me when I look at the actors I’m nominated with, truly.’

He furthermore added: ‘I never in my wildest dreams thought I could be in a category with these men and I’m so proud to be one of your peers and to celebrate my peers tonight and be celebrated by them.

‘It’s an honor and I’m taken aback by it.’

The ceremony was presented by Will & Grace star Megan Mullally.

Meanwhile Glee star Darren Criss won a trophy for his role in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

In Ryan Murphy’s miniseries about the murder of the fashion icon, Criss played the killer Andrew Cunanan.

‘I won’t be another straight boy taking a gay man’s role’

Last month, the straight actor said he would no longer be playing gay roles.

‘There are certain [queer] roles that I’ll see that are just wonderful,’ Criss told Bustle..

‘But I want to make sure I won’t be another straight boy taking a gay man’s role.’
