An influential member of Australia’s right-wing Liberal Party had his homophobic past exposed live on television.
Eric Abetz is the former Leader of the Government in the Senate. His party are very outspoke about opposing making same-sex marriage illegal.
Live on a debate show, he came under fire for opposing the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1994.
Labor Senator Sam Dastyari had the evidence ready to back up his claims Eric Abetz is homophobic.

‘I think you know that sort of slur is completely wrong’
Abetz tried to cover his past up by explaining: ‘The federal parliament was seeking to override the state government… that was what I was objecting to very strongly. I think you know that sort of slur is completely wrong.’
He then went on to say he introduced Senator Dastyari to a gay acquaintance backstage so he ‘would know’ he is not a homophobe.
Senator Dastyari responded: ‘Eric, you can’t sit here and tell us about that we need to have more reasonable debate and the tone of the debate when you look at your own history of comments when it comes to this matter.
‘Your own history of what you’ve said in these debates, going all the way back to when you were first elected in 1994.’
