Rosie O’Donnell rips Brian Williams – compares him to known liar Lance Armstrong

Rosie O’Donnell is buying none of NBC News anchor Brian Williams’ explanation for why he falsely claimed to be on a helicopter that was forced down by rocket-propelled grenade fire during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003.

‘It’s a blatant lie. It’s a Lance Armstrong lie,’ O’Donnell said on Thursday’s edition of ABC’s The View.

Armstrong is the disgraced former Tour de France champion who for years denied using performance enhancing drugs only to later admit he had.

Of Williams O’Donnell also said: ‘I think he fabricated that story, and the apology seemed a little oddly circuitous.’

Crew members of the downed helicopter called Williams out on the story which he had repeated several times over the past decade including as recently as last week.

This led Williams to apologize this week: ‘I would not have chosen to make this mistake. I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.’

O’Donnell was far less forgiving of Williams than some of her co-hosts.

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg said: ‘No, no it’s not a Lance Armstrong lie. People forget themselves. They get all wrapped up in their story. What is the word?’ Goldberg asked the panel.

Replied a far from amused O’Donnell: ‘Lying.’

Co-host Nicolle Wallace suggested the word ’embellishing’ which seemed to suit Goldberg’s point.

‘I have embellished stuff that I had to take back,’ Goldberg told viewers. ‘I get how it can happen. I’m not perfect, and I can make stuff up sometimes.’

O’Donnell, who has clashed with Goldberg on air in the past, remained largely silent when the topics shifted away from Williams no doubt giving new fuel to constant speculation of behind-the-scenes tension on the show.
