Rosie O’Donnell slams Lindsay Lohan being cast as Elizabeth Taylor

The casting of Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor in the upcoming Lifetime movie Liz & Dick has Rosie O'Donnell pretty skepical.

O'Donnell, whose The Rosie Show was canceled by OWN in March, appeared on NBC's The Today Show on Tuesday (24 April) and blasted the Lohan casting.

'I feel very sorry for her,' O’Donnell said. ' I think she needs a lot of help. She needs a lot of time away.

'She’s had a lot of trouble doing every single movie, including [Saturday Night Live]. She was out and not at rehearsal. I think she’s not in a place to work.'

O'Donnell appeared on Today as part of a regular feature called The Professionals which also featured Star Jones and Donny Deutch. The panel was asked by host Matt Lauer if it was a good idea for Lohan to appear in the movie due to begin filming in Los Angeles in June.

When Deutch disagreed and called Lohan 'this generation's Elizabeth Taylor,' O'Donnell really let loose.

'You're out of your mind!' she said. 'You're a crackhead…The last thing she did good she was 16! I don't think she's right for the role, and I don't think she's capable at this point of doing what's needed to portray that character. I think the interest level in her has waned significantly.'

Lohan's spokesperson only had this to say: 'I think Rosie should focus on her own career and stop worrying about everyone else's.'

The film will focus on Taylor’s high-profile relationship with actor Richard Burton to whom she was married to twice and starred opposite in such films as Cleopatra, Taming of the Shrew, The Sandpiper, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

The relationship began when the pair met on the set of Cleopatra and both were married to others.

Lohan, who once starred in such box office hits as Mean Girls and Freaky Friday, has spent more time in a courtroom than on a movie set in recent years.
