Actor and comedian Rufus Hound has joined the cast of Russel T Davies’ latest gay drama series, Cucumber.
Hound, best known for his appearances on panel show Celebrity Juice, will be playing a love interest to lead character Henry, played by Vincent Franklin.
Cucumber, currently filming in Manchester, chronicles the ‘passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life.’
Father Ted alumni Ardal O’Hanlon and Doctor Who actress Adjoa Andoh have also been cast in the new series, although their parts have not yet been announced. Other previously-announced actors include Julie Hesmondhalgh, best known for playing trans character Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street.
Cucumber is being filmed alongside E4 sister series Banana and online-exclusive factual spinoff Tofu.
The names of the individual series are based on different categories of male erection, according to Davies, saying: ‘I once read about a scientific institute which had studied the male erections… It divided the hard-won into four categories, from soft to hard.
‘One, tofu. Two, peeled banana. Three, banana. And four, cucumber. Right there and then I knew I had my drama.’
Companion show Banana has also added new members to its cast, with BAFTA-nominated Luke Newbury and newcomer Dino Fletsher playing younger characters Josh and Aiden respectively. Both characters will appear in Cucumber, before being central characters in Banana.
Cucumber, Banana and Tofu are expected to premiere in 2015.
