RuPaul was photographed by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz for the May print edition of Vogue, and the photographs are the most fabulous thing in existence. Period.
Dressed as Queen Elizabeth I, the queen of drag queens, 58, donned the royal garbs for a photo-shoot in Warner Bros. Studio, California.
Above all, RuPaul stunned in a billowing gold-brocade skirt, a corset, and a halo of red dreadlocks for the shoot, dropped online today (15 April).
What was the shoot for?
But alongside the shoot, over a coffee in West Hollywood, RuPaul sat with Vogue.com contributor Abby Aguirre. He rapped his new Netflix Show, camp as a concept, and having an open marriage.
On drag queens, the television personality said: ‘My job, our job as drag queens, has always been to remind you that this outfit you’re wearing, or this label you put on yourself, is just a label.

‘Drag queens are the shamans or the witch doctors or even the court jesters. To remind you what is really real.’
Moreover, in the interview, RuPaul goes onto speak about his upcoming role in Netflix original show, AJ and the Queen. The streaming service cast RuPaul to play a down-on-her-luck drag queen named Ruby, travelling cross-country with an 11-year-old orphan named AJ.
Furthermore, the actor also revealed he never had to ‘come out,’ because ‘It was understood that Ru was Ru.’
Though, twelve years ago, Leibovitz took official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II in full regalia at Buckingham Palace. She famously asked England’s longest-reigning monarch to remove her tiara for the shoot.
But Leibovitz didn’t file this request in the presence of drag royalty. As RuPaul stood majestically behind an august gold backdrop, hand drenched in jewelry on hip.
RuPaul takes the UK
Fast-forwarding to April, the UK is keeping RuPaul rather busy this month.
After being spotted yesterday in London hanging out with fellow legends Adele and Michelle Obama, this all comes ahead of the release of Drag Race UK.
But with filming underway for the British spin-off, Drag Race fans will have to make the most of this Vogue shoot in the meantime.
However, the year is far than over for Ru. He’ll be gracing airways in June as the host of his own daytime talk-show.
