RuPaul’s Drag Race celebrates astounding 14 Emmy nominations

RuPaul’s Drag Race picked up 14 Emmy nominations today (16 July).

The VH1 hit-reality television show took to Twitter to announce all of the categories it picked up nominations for in the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards.

’14s, 14s, 14s across the board!’ RuPaul’s Drag Race tweeted. ‘Thank you to [the Television Academy] for the 14 Emmy Nominations.’

The account then listed each category:

  • Outstanding Casting For A Reality Program
  • Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program
  • Outstanding Costumes For Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Programming
  • Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program
  • Outstanding Competition Program
  • Outstanding Hairstyling For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special
  • Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special
  • Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Competition Program
  • Outstanding Picture Editing For A Structured Reality Or Competition
  • Outstanding Picture Editing For A Structured Reality Or Competition Program
  • Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program
  • Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series
  • Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series

Nomination number 14 is for RuPaul, with Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Competition Program.

The Emmy Awards will take place on 23 September.

Who else picked up Emmy nominations?

Pose star Billy Porter picked up an Emmy nomination for his role as Pray Tell in Ryan Murphy’s hit-show Pose. The category is Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Netflix’s hugely popular reboot of Queer Eye picked up six Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Structured Reality Program.

Both Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer picked up nominations in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for their tumultuous and often intimate relationship in Killing Eve. Then Viola Davis picked up a nomination in the same category, for her role as bisexual lawyer Annalise Keating.

Hugh Grant picked up a Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie nomination for his role in A Very English Scandal, alongside gay actor Ben Wishaw. The story is based on a relationship between English politician Jeremy Thorpe and ex-lover Norman Josiffe.

Game of Thrones picked up a record-breaking 32 nominations this year. Among them is recently out-queer actress Sophie Turner in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.

Billy Eichner’s Billy on the Street also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

While Schitt’s Creek, which features an openly pansexual lead, picked up a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Gay actor and writer Ryan O’Connell picked up a nomination for his Netflix show Special. While Laverne Cox snagged a nomination for her work in Orange is the New Black.
