Far-right US radio host Rush Limbaugh says he believes President Obama wants to take over Republican strongholds with the help of ‘lesbians and transgender hillbillies’.
He made the comments last week as part of his program, the Rush Limbaugh Show, airing on the Premiere Radio Network, in response to the 15th annual Nationwide LGBT Rural Summit.
The event brings together LGBTI people from rural communities to network and share resources.
Held at Drake University in Idaho, it was co-sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, much to the chagrin of Limbaugh and other right-wingers, who called it a waste of tax money.
‘What the point of this is, folks, it’s not about lesbian farmers,’ Limbaugh said.
‘What they’re trying to do is convince lesbians to become farmers.’
The famously anti-gay host went on to say he never knew lesbians wanted to ‘get behind the horse and the plow and start burrowing’, but claimed it was an attack on Republicans.
‘They’re going after every geographic region that is known to be largely conservative,’ he said.
‘They never stop, folks. They are constantly on the march.’
But Limbaugh wasn’t alone, as the staunchly conservative Washington Free Beacon also pitched in.
‘The all-day summit will teach lesbian and transgender hillbillies how to get subsidies from the government,’ the Beacon wrote.
‘Like rural housing loans and “community facility grants”.’
The Daily Wire, on the other hand, also had problems believing in the existence of non-straight, non-male farmers and described the summit as an event where ‘lesbians in overalls will be taught about subsidies’.
‘Federal bureaucrats are spending your hard-earned tax dollars to promote the idea that lesbian farmers exist,’ Amanda Prestigiacomo wrote.
‘Yes, you read that correctly.’
Calling the summit the ‘dumbest thing the Feds have ever spent your tax dollars on’, she also mocked it as a ‘noble cause’.
‘And here I was thinking the LGBT community would prefer protection from ISIS,’ she wrote.
‘Those barbarians who kill scores of gays in nightclubs right here in America for simply being gay.’
