Russia bans transgender people from driving

Russia has banned transgender people from getting drivers licenses.

The government is blaming too many road accident for the move that lists being transgender as one of the ‘mental disorders’ that should prevent people from driving.

Other ‘disorders’ include fetishism, exhibitionism, voyeurism, compulsive stealing, and ‘pathological’ gambling, according to the BBC.

The Association of Russian Lawyers for Human Rights is calling the new law ‘discriminatory’ while the head of Russia’s Professional Drivers Union says the tightening of medical requirements is ‘fully justified.’

This is the latest move by the government to be seen as anti-LGBTI.

In 2013, Russia passed an anti-gay propaganda law which made it illegal to publicly support homosexuality.
