Russian lesbian nightclub under investigation after gay kiss went viral

A lesbian nightclub in Russia is under investigation after a picture of its owner kissing another woman went viral.

Last month, the owner of the club, only identified as Kseniya, and her partner were sat in front of St Petersburg lawmaker Vitaly Milonov on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow.

Milonov, an outspoken critic of gay rights, was instrumental in the creation of Russia’s infamous anti-gay propaganda law.

She took several selfies kissing her partner while he pretended to ignore them in background, and posted them on Russian social media. She told her followers they were on their way to Infinity, a lesbian club she owns.

Prosecutors are investigating Infinity’s official Facebook page, under the suspicion that some of its almost 27,000 members are under the age of 18-years-old.

This would be considered against the law in Russia, where the ‘promotion’ of LGBTI relationships to minors is outlawed.

Vitaly Cherkasov, a lawyer with the human rights group Agora, told TV Rain that members of the club’s management had been called in for questioning after a group named ‘Moscow is not Sodom! St. Petersburg is not Gomorrah!’ sent complaints about the Facebook page to the local prosecutor’s office.

‘Some anonymous people who’ve probably never been to our club before simply tossed unnecessary work onto the prosecutors, distracting them from really important matters,” Alexandra Stepanova, one of the club’s directors, told the Russian news site Fontanka.

‘During the checks, they did not identify any violations. [Russian government communications watchdog] Roskomnadzor is currently checking our group on Vkontakte for the presence of violations.’
