Non-binary actor Lachlan Watson has helped shape their own character’s gender identity on new Netflix show, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
A fan asked Watson for clarifications on their character Susie, one of Sabrina’s best friends.
Susie is constantly bullied in school for her androgynous appearance. In the pilot, male students pull up Susie’s shirt ‘to see if she had breasts’ and ‘to see if she was really a girl or a boy under there’.
Ater Susie gets bullied, Sabrina and Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair) found the feminist club WICCA, which stands for Women’s Intersectional Cultural and Creative Association. The club provides a support network for female students and aims to prevent bullying.
Is Susie non-binary?
Asked about which pronouns to use to refer to Susie, Watson replied giving precious insights on Susie’s future gender journey.
The actor, in fact, revealed their character Susie identifies as female at the moment. However, that might change over time.
‘susie is female on the show (for now) so yes they are referred to as she/her,’ they wrote.
‘but i try to use they/them whenever i speak about susie just bc i believe she/her would make susie a tad uncomfy!’ they also explained.
Although they confirmed Susie ‘is still female’ at the moment, Watson teased about what might happen in season 2.
‘but their pronouns will be changing very very soon,’ they also said with a smiley emoji.
A feminist show
The reboot of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina stars Mad Men Kiernan Shipka in the titular role. It premiered on Netflix on 26 October.
The show has received mostly positive reviews. Critics have praised the reboot for its feminist characters and its portrayal of pansexuality and gender-fluid identities.
