Sacha Baron Cohen won’t play gay rocker Freddie Mercury in film after all

Sacha Baron Cohen playing the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury seemed like ideal casting based on the striking physical resemblance alone.

But it is not going to happen after all.

Cohen, who had been attached to a biopic about Queen since 2010, has walked away from the project, according to Deadline Hollywood.

‘The reason is that the band wanted to make more of a PG movie about Queen while Cohen was counting on a gritty R-rated tell-all centered around the gifted gay singer,’ Deadline states.

The surviving band members have script approval.

The band’s many hits include We Are the Champions, Somebody to Love, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You, among others.

Mercury died 24 November 1991, only one day after publicly acknowledging that he had the disease. He was just 45 and widely regarded as one of rock’s greatest all-time entertainers.
