Sam Smith apologizes to Dustin Lance Black but doesn’t mention Tom Daley

Sam Smith urges everyone to play George Michael's music as loudly as they can.

Sam Smith has taken to Twitter to apologize to Dustin Lance Black for not being aware that Black and several other openly gay people had won Academy Awards before Smith won his on Sunday night.

‘Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack,’ Smith tweeted today. ‘I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x’

After Smith took to the stage as winner of the best original song category, he thought he might have been the first openly gay person to have won an Academy Award.

Black, an Oscar winner in 2009 for the screenplay for Milk, quickly took to Twitter to correct him.

Black who is engaged to Olympic diver Tom Daley, wrote:‘Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.’

Black elaborated earlier today on the Oscar part – but not the Daley part: ‘I think knowing our collective LGBTQ history is important. That’s all. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women. We should honor that.’

Smith did not address the Daley reference in his tweet back to Black.

The singer-songwriter also tweeted: ‘Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point. My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly.’
