Samira Wiley reveals a OITNB co-star accidentally outed her as gay

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli tie the knot

An Orange Is The New Black co-star accidentally outed Samira Wiley as gay.

The actress and model is best known for starring as Poussey Washington on the Netflix series.

And while she played a LGBTI role there, she wasn’t comfortable being known as an out gay woman off screen.

She said it took her a few years to not only come to terms with her sexuality.

‘First season [of Orange is the New Black] I wasn’t out at all,’ Wiley said on the Nancy podcast.

But instead of waiting for the moment to come out, she was outed by a co-star.

‘Someone from my cast actually, during the interview they were talking about out gay actors in the cast,’ she said.

‘They mentioned my name and I saw it in print, and I cried. I cried a lot.’

Wiley confessed she went through a ‘journey’ in order to feel comfortable about her sexuality.

Samira Wiley: ‘You should be able to come out on your own terms’

Samira plays Moira on The Handmaid’s Tale.

While she is glad to be out, she wishes she could have come out when she was ready.

‘That’s something somebody took from me,’ Wiley said. ‘You should be able to come out on your own terms.’

Wiley was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

It is through playing Poussey that allowed her to come to terms with herself.

‘I wasn’t out in the beginning and I think falling in love with Poussey, which is a really thing that happened to me, helped me fall in love with myself as well,’ she said.

Orange is the New Black star Samira Wiley married long term partner and show’s writer Lauren Morelli in March 2017.
