A Saudi Arabian gay man is to be jailed and lashed 450 times for trying to meet other gay men on Twitter.
The 24-year-old was arrested after he posted several messages on his social media account.
A member of the religious police, after being told about the tweets, posed as another gay man on Twitter.
Luring him into the sting, the authorities seized him and took his mobile phone.
According to Gulf News, his mobile phone was searched and several ‘immoral’ pictures were allegedly discovered.
During the trial, the prosecutor requested a harsh punishment and the confiscation of the mobile phone on charges of promoting debauchery.
The 24-year-old admitted to the ‘charge’ of attempting to communicate other gay people.
The court said the 450 lashes will be given over 15 sessions.
In Saudi Arabia, convicted LGBTI people face lashings, fines, floggings, up to life imprisonment, torture, chemical castrations and death. If the 24-year-old is convicted twice, then he will likely be executed.
