Trafford council Sean Anstee leader to run to be Tory mayoral candidate

29-year-old Trafford council leader Sean Anstee ends months of speculation by announcing his plans to run for the position of Conservative mayoral candidate of Greater Manchester.

Cllr Anstee told Manchester Evening News that next year’s race could be a ‘game changer’ and that people should not automatically assume that Labour hopeful Andy Burnham would win.

‘Many people in the north used to feel the Labour party represented them, but no longer feel that’s the case,’ he said. ‘What they need is someone who will – and that’s what I’m going to try to do.’

He went on by saying that he believes this is his chance to do something new.

Cllr Anstee married his partner Thom in 2010 and in 2014 he became the youngest council leader in the country at the age of 26.

Cllr Anstee is also an advocate for LGBTI rights.
