Drag Race queen Shangela appeared on Ariana Grande’s new album thank u, next and we’re loving the backstory.
During track three – entitled NASA – Shangela starts off the song with an iconic speaking line. She says in the song: ‘This is one small step for woman, one giant leap for womankind.’
The fan-favorite Drag Race queen took to Twitter after the album’s release on Friday (8 February) to confirm the cameo.
She tweeted: ‘As an @ArianaGrande Stan, it’s mind-blowing to be a part of this new album. Gagged. Geeked. GONE. Get it now. And go in on track 3 #NASA!!! I can’t wait to share how it came about. Love u Ari! (And luv u @FrankieJGrande too!)’
Ariana then tweeted: ‘she came thru w frankie one night to visit us in the studio & said that to (sic) …. i was like ….. pls say that again and be on my album’.
Shangela: ‘I wanna come out with a moonsuit with some space titties’
Shangela then spoke to Billboard to reveal the whole story.
She revealed she was having dinner with Ariana’s brother Frankie, when the Dangerous Woman singer texted them to come over to the studio to have a preview listen of the new album.
They listened to the song NASA, but Ariana didn’t currently have an introduction for it.
Shangela then started explaining how exciting it would be to perform the song on a live stage.
‘I wanna come out with a moonsuit with some space titties,’ she envisioned. ‘I wanna come out like I’m walking on the moon. I’m gonna lift up that fake moon mask, and I’m gonna say: “This is one small step for woman, one giant leap for womankind.”‘
Ariana said she loved that idea, then whipped out her phone and asked if Shangela wanted to record her saying it, just as a joke.
Then a couple of months later, Frankie called Shangela and casually asked how she would like to be credited for the cameo.
She replied in shock: ‘You gotta be kidding!’
Ariana Grande confirmed the story through her own Twitter.
