Shawn Mendes talks about feeling the need to prove he’s not gay

Shawn Mendes

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes graces the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone and gives a candid interview within its pages. In the piece, he opens about about his private life.

Mendes, 20, was snapped up by a Universal after securing thousands of views for his Vine videos in 2013. He’s since had three number one albums in the US and headlined three world tours.

Rumors around Mendes’ sexuality and love life

Some people have speculated about Mendes sexuality, despite the fact he has previously stated he is attracted to women. He says the rumors about his sexuality occasionally get to him.

‘I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true,’ he says of, ‘this massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay.’

‘In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay. Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.’

He also says that had he been gay and in the closet, the endless speculation about his sexuality could have caused him far worse stress.

Clicking from some comments on YouTube, which speculated on his sexuality: ‘I thought, “You f*cking guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.” That’s something that kills people. That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?’

He says the gay rumors have even made him scrutinize his body language. However, if he sometimes comes across as feminine, suggests growing up with 15 female cousins may have played a role: ‘braiding hair and painting nails. Maybe I am a little more feminine — but that’s the way it is. That’s why I am me.’

Hailey Bieber

Elsewhere in the piece, he confirms other rumors. Namely that he and Hailey Bieber were briefly more than just friends.

Mendes and Bieber (then Hailey Baldwin) attended the Met Gala in May, fuelling questions about their relationship. Just a month later, Hailey appeared to be engaged to Justin Bieber, with whom she’d previously been involved. The two have since married.

Asked if he and Hailey were ever in a relationship, Mendes responds, ‘I don’t even wanna put a title on it. I think it was more of a zone of limbo….I texted Hailey [after her engagement], “Congratulations,” and I really am happy for them.

‘She’s still one of the fucking coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met.’

In a blow to his clean-cut image, he also admits he’s a fan of weed.

‘I love weed. I wouldn’t tweet that — not yet, at least — but it’s really good for me. When I’m home, I’ll smoke and then play guitar for seven hours.’

Mendes responds

Mendes tweeted the cover of the new Rolling Stone. However, he appeared to take umbrage with the magazine’s headline. It headlined his interview, ‘Confessions of a neurotic pop idol’. He commented, ‘Of course I have my insecurities and struggles but that’s just one part of me. Sometimes the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told and I wish it had here. I love what I do and I love you guys so much.’
