Singer comes out on national TV in moving American Idol audition

Singer Jorgie auditioning on American Idol

A contestant made a big impression on American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie when he auditioned with an original song this week.

Making the whole experience that much more personal and moving was the fact that Jorgie, the contestant, came out publicly in his song.

‘I just recently came out,’ Jorgie tells the judges before getting into his song.

He also explained to Perry how she was an inspiration for him growing up: ‘Listening to I Kissed a Girl and knowing it could be mainstream, that helped me so much.’

When Perry asks Jorgie if his father knows, Jorgie puts his hands to his face. ‘No, he doesn’t know anything about me,’ he explains. ‘When he sees this, he’s going to know everything.’

Jorgie sings the original song Heaven for the judges.

‘I wrote it about a guy I liked but he didn’t know because I wasn’t out, and it was just like, “My life would be heaven if you knew that I liked you.”‘

So how did his audition go? Watch below to find out!

The judges are in awe of Jorgie’s performance.

‘You’ve got a real emotional voice,’ Perry tells him.

Richie also added his praise: ‘When I say you nailed it, I mean to the point of in awe. I love what you just did.’

All three judges gave him a yes and now Jorgie is headed to Hollywood for the televised competition.

Jorgie’s audition followed Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon’s viral audition last week. Harmon is the gay son of a pastor and also auditioned with an original song, this one called Almost Heaven.
