Six youths have been jailed for three years for gay sex in Tunisia, according to a local LGBTI group Shams.

The men were sentenced by a court in Kairouan on Thursday (10 December) after they were forced to undergo anal examinations to ‘prove’ their ‘guilt.’

One of the youths was sentenced to an additional six months for ‘indecent exposure’ over videos police found on his computer.

The court also banished the six defendants from the city of Kairouan for five years, starting after they complete their sentences.

Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam and attracts pilgrims from across the Muslim world.

‘Shams protests against this unjust judgment; calls on civil society to mobilize for the release of six prisoners [and] condemns the use of Article 230 to restrict individual freedoms and the invasion of citizens’ privacy,’ the group wrote on Facebook.

Article 230 of Tunisia’ penal code punishes private acts of sodomy between consenting adults by up to three years imprisonment.
