Some scandalized by Kinky Boots performance at Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

But writer Harvey Fierstein praises it as a 'message of tolerance and acceptance to America's parade'

Some scandalized by Kinky Boots performance at Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

The musical Kinky Boots may have won the Tony Award for best musical this year but its presence in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade was just too much for some people.

The show, written by Harvey Fierstein with music by Cyndi Lauper, tells the story of a struggling British shoe factory’s young, straight-laced owner who forms an unlikely partnership with a drag queen to save the business with custom fetish-type footwear.

A number from the show was featured on NBC’s telecast of the parade and a disapproving YouTube user by the name of SuperLatvian posted video of it.

‘Does every parade these days really have turn turn into a gay pride thing?’ SuperLatvian wrote. ‘Even a traditional family oriented event is no more out of bounds. Parents must have had a lovely time explaining to their kids who watched the parade what a "transsexual" is or why those men dressed in such a way.’

Sites such as EW.com also got negative remarks with a reader named JT writing: ‘It is un-family and un-called for to feature the “Kinky Boots” segment!! !’m just “thankful” my kids didn’t see it. I’m appalled. On a day when we are all trying to enjoy our family, we shouldn’t have to explain that segment to our children! Poor taste!’

Fierstein reacted to the backlash with a statement on Facebook: ‘I’m so proud that the cast of Kinky Boots brought their message of tolerance and acceptance to America’s parade. Ten years ago I was humbled to ride a float dressed as Mrs. Claus, and it was the thrill of a lifetime. Congratulations to Macy’s, on leading the world, not only with your salesmanship, but also your humanity.’
