Spanish actor turned politician Toni Canto has spoken out about his bare-all role in a newly released gay themed movie set in Cuba in which he plays a Spanish sex tourist.
Canto, an MP with Spain’s Union, Progress and Democracy Party, was filmed on location in Havana in 2011 for the film The Last Match just a few months before being elected to office – but says if offered a similar role now he’d have no hesitation about taking it.
‘If you’re asking me if I would have played a gay character in sex scenes while being an MP, the answer is yes,’ Canto told Spanish news agency EFE.
Canto said if people thought taking on the role was controversial they should have higher priorities.
‘I’m aware of the fact that I live in a society where people are more shocked by seeing an MP’s backside than by one who robs or is paid under the table,’ Canto said.
The Last Match (Spanish title La Partida – literally The Departed), directed by Spanish filmmaker Antonio Hens, will have its Spanish premiere on Friday.
The film tells the story of two soccer mad young Cuban male prostitutes trying to eke out a living on the streets of Havana.
