Stephen Fry has said he is ‘very very happy’ after news broke of his plans to marry his younger boyfriend.
The QI presenter, 57, and comedian Elliott Spencer, 27, formally gave notice at Fry’s local registry in Dereham, Norfolk, according to documents dated 23 December.
The couple were first photographed together in November and they are believed to struck up a relationship over the summer.
‘Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!, Fry tweeted.
‘Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx’.
The couple are expected to marry within a year before the notice expires.
Friends have credited Spencer with putting a smile back on actor’s face after his long battle with depression, which culminated in a suicide attempt three years ago.
A friend of Fry’s told the Sun, ‘Stephen and Elliott get on brilliantly together. It’s fantastic to see Stephen with a smile on his face again.
‘He has been very, very open about his battles with drugs and depression.
‘Elliott seems to have given him the confidence to live his life again. It’s great to have the old Stephen back.’
