LGBTI animated series Steven Universe just released a trailer for its upcoming movie adaptation.
The series follows a group of genderless but female-presenting aliens called The Crystal Gems. They, along with half-human, half-Gem Steven, attempt to save Earth from the uncaring rulers of the Gem Homeworld.
The show, which also featured a same-sex wedding, made history when it won its first GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Program this year. It was, in fact, the first animated series to do so.
When is Steven Universe The Movie out?
The show premiered in 2013 and aired the season five finale in January 2019. However, creator – bisexual non-binary animator Rebecca Sugar – had revealed last year that a movie adaptation was in the works.
The trailer for the movie was presented in exclusive at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It will be a feature-length musical adventure premiering on Cartoon Network in September.
The panel drew thousands of fans there to hear creator Sugar talk about the animated series with some of the voice talent, including Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Estelle (Garnet), and Shelby Rabara (Peridot).

Once the movie is out, a one-hour making-of documentary will be available featuring behind the scenes footage.
