Straight couple arrested for gay sex in Tanzania

A straight couple could be charged with homosexuality in Tanzania.

Maua Sadick, a 24-year-old trans man, and his partner Lucy Fred, 23, were detained for two days after their arrest in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in east Africa.

The couple’s pictures were plastered across the pages of a local tabloid Uwazi with the headline ‘Beautiful Girls Arrested For Homosexuality’.

Neighbors informed police they suspected the couple were ‘married’ and engaging in same-sex intimacy, a ‘crime’ that could see them in jail.

Uwazi claims the police arrived when they could clearly hear noise coming from the couple’s apartment.

When the officers stormed in, it was alleged they found and seized a vibrator they had been using.

This was enough for the couple to be taken to the police station, an LGBTI activist has reported. They are now awaiting charges.

Tanzania considers anal sex, and attempted anal sex, no matter by whom, to be punishable with up to five years in prison.

But the law states any violations of the law against ‘carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature’, which means homosexuality, is punishable with up to life imprisonment.
