Swiss football star Ramona Bachmann has revealed she is a lesbian.
Her team is currently riding high after a strong 10-1 victory against Ecuador in the Women’s World Cup in Canada, with Bachmann scoring three goals in the latter half of the game.
So it was perfect timing for the 24-year-old to reveal she is in a committed relationship with Camille Lara, a 21-year-old student based in Sweden.
‘When I hold hands with Camille on the street in Switzerland, people turn. This is not the case in Sweden, and not here in Canada,’ she told Sonntagsblick, the Swiss Sunday newspaper.
The news has been welcomed by the Mayor of Zurich, Corin Maunch – herself an out lebsian.
‘The coming out of Ramona Bachmann points out that here, this is an evidence of greater acceptance than to live openly as lesbian, gay or queer,’ she said.
Unlike in men’s football, there are a number of openly gay and bisexual female footballers nationally and internationally, including Germany’s Nadine Angerer and the US’s Abby Wambach. Meet them here.
