Stephen Colbert took 30 seconds to quickly – and effectively – disprove Donald Trump’s recent claim about the expense of gender-neutral bathrooms.
On The Late Show Wednesday (24 May), Colbert did a bit in which he is walking down a backstage corridor with his ‘accountant’ to help him check out Trump’s claim that it would cost ‘hundreds of billions of dollars’ to transform bathrooms into gender-neutral.
Colbert and the accountant reach a bathroom door which has the sign ‘Men’s Bathroom’ on it. Colbert tears off the top half which leaves the ‘Bathroom’ sign remaining.
He asks the accountant: ‘How much did that coast?’
She replies, poker-faced: ‘$200 billion.’
Trump had been asked by Bill O’Reilly on Fox News earlier this week if he had any gender-neutral bathrooms on any of the properties he owns.
‘No we don’t have that. I hope not,’ Trump said. ‘It would be unbelievably expensive nationwide. It would be hundreds of billions of dollars. It would be an unbelievably expensive thing to do. I think our country would rather have us spending money on other things. The number of people we’re talking about is really a small number.’
Last month (see second video), Colbert tackled the topic of transgender people using bathrooms which has led to a national debate and legal battles over new laws.
Colbert had this message to lawmakers: ‘If you’re obsessed with who’s using what bathroom and what they’ve got downtown, you’re the weirdo.’
The federal government announced earlier this month it is suing the state of North Carolina for its law forcing trans students to use bathrooms matching the gender on their birth certificate.
